Beginner American Sign Language (ASL)
Student enrolled in this class will come after school and do what they do best---TALK! But in this class they will only use their hands. American Sign Language (ASL) is used by half a million people in the United States as their primary language. Just as students learn Spanish and German at our school, students in the ASL will also acquire this language by playing games, hearing stories, and learning basic vocabulary. This class will be social AND informative!
Students will learn the basics of ASL including:
Finger spelling of the alphabet;
How to spell your own name and other words;
How to identify family members, animals, objects, emotions, places, colors, weather…;
How to ask questions and have simple conversations;
How to sign and sing simple songs;
And students will learn about deaf culture.
Dates: Wednesdays 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/26, 3/5
Time: Wednesdays, 3:00pm-4:30
Ages: Grades 1-4, or by request for older students
About the Instructors: Girma Grigley is a current 10th grade student at Chicago Waldorf High School. She learned and used American Sign Language before speaking since her father is deaf. Girma is enthusiastic to work with our students and teach them the beauty of the language and to educate them about deaf culture.
Andrea Shaffer is the Faculty Director at Chicago Waldorf School. She taught her last class ASL with the help of her friend, Matt Anderson. Ms. Shaffer grew up with a friend who was deaf, and who eventually became Miss Deaf America! She has always found it to be a beautiful language, and has found it helpful to know on many occasions.
