Senior Spotlight: Michael

what has been a standout memory, or something that you'll always remember about your time here?

I have loved the small community here. I've loved being able to know my teachers, as well as being able to know all my classmates. It's something that has been especially prevalent in the high school as we have had such a small class here. I will definitely miss this community in college.

What's been your favorite block or morning lesson that you've had while in high school?

My favorite block was electricity and magnetism. Because electricity is electrical engineering, and that's what actually got me interested in doing electrical engineering in my future.

How do you feel cwhs has shaped you as a person and prepared you for the next phase of your life?

I think that it's been great for learning how to ask for help when you need it. With that small class size that we talked about, it's easy to know your teachers and make sure you’re getting what you need while learning. And it has prepared me in writing a lot. We've worked a lot, especially this year, on how to write and how to write well, because that's something I know I'll be doing a lot of in college.

And it's definitely prepared me math-wise. We are already doing calculus, which is a class that you often first take in college. It's prepared me very well.

Tell me a little bit about your senior project, why you chose the project, and what was the process like?

My senior project was Engineering Through Failure. It focused on how engineering is a whole process, how failure is a part of that process — and how it can be a good thing — as well as how it can sometimes not be such a good thing.

And my process has been creating three different things. I've been using the engineering process to build them and design them and seeing how the engineering process applies to it. Seeing when I fail, how I fail, how I succeed. And, yeah, it's been a great process.

What's next for you after graduating CWHS?

I will be going to the University of Iowa this fall for Electrical Engineering. I hope to get my masters in electrical engineering there. I'm very excited.
