Everyone plays.

We believe that play, in all its forms, is an essential part of human growth. When it comes to Middle and High School athletics, everyone makes the team, giving our young people a chance to experiment with different sports and levels of competition in both a supportive and competitive environment.

Physical education starts in the Early Childhood in the form of free play, narrative movement, and fine motor development. By Grade School, our students incorporate movement and coordination exercises into their daily studies by jumping rope in Math class, scaling our place space in Parkour, learning new games in Gym, and practicing Eurythmy, all in addition to self-guided outdoor play. In Middle School, interscholastic team sports begin, where students can learn teamwork, leadership, and responsibility in addition to skill development. In High School, our teams are competing in city- and statewide leagues and tournaments.

Opportunities are everywhere.

Even if your child chooses not to play organized sports, opportunities for physical education are woven into our daily and seasonal curriculum.

Parkour classes teach students to move fluidly, trust their bodies, and gain physical confidence; caving, rock climbing, and rafting trips allow students to use their bodies in nature, nurturing their physical skills in a fun outdoor environment; Eurythmy teaches students to move with grace, poise, and strength; Circus Club is an extracurricular opportunity for students to learn circus arts like unicycling, aerial silks, and acrobatics; Pentathlon preparation teaches fifth grade students about Ancient History while developing uncommon athletic skills like javelin- and discus-throwing and Greek wrestling.

statement on
transgender athletes

As has always been the case at the Chicago Waldorf School, young transgender students will be able to participate in our athletics program in a way that affirms and celebrates their gender. We believe firmly that validating children in their gender identity is vital to the thriving not only of individuals, but of the school community as a whole.
