Tom McCarthy earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from University College of Dublin in Ireland. He taught as an adjunct professor in Massachusetts and Illinois colleges for a period of over 20 years. Tom’s musical training took place in Guitar Craft, an experimental school for exploring the Way of the Performing Musician, beginning in 1985. Tom returned to the project after nearly 25 years, performing with the Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists in Los Angeles and a tour of the Midwest in 2016. In between, Tom released two albums of original compositions, scored two independent films, presented tributes to Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell at the Jazz Record Art Collective in Chicago, and performed nightly for over 10 years as a cast member of Blue Man Group. He has a deep enthusiasm for Waldorf education and is delighted to be a teacher at Chicago Waldorf School.
