Eurythmy: Course Description

The eurythmy curriculum in the high school continues the work initiated in the grades but with heightened consciousness. Beginning in 9th grade, fundamentals of eurythmy are reintroduced with greater explanation of the underlying principles and less reliance on imitation.
As in the grades, the high school curriculum refines both gross and fine motor skills, develops spatial and body awareness and strengthens the social capacities of the class and students individually. Students lean to form expressive gestures and to move with ever increasing precision and fluidity. A deep appreciation for music and poetry can be developed as students cultivate careful listening skills to translate what they experience aurally into a visible expression.
Students gain self-mastery and discipline practicing pieces in order to bring them to performance level standards which they share at assemblies and festivals.

Curriculum Area: Movement
Ninth Grade: The students are reintroduced, in a more conscious way, to the basic principles of eurythmy, including the gestures for vowels and consonants and the tone gestures. They explore the space around them, and the qualitative differences between moving forward, backward and sideways. The different expressions possible in the movements of straight lines and curves i.e., thinking, feeling and willing forms are related and expressed through epic, lyric and dramatic poetry.
