6th grade gym and extracurriculars

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Hello and Welcome back to school,

Sixth grade gym has several distinctions from gym in the earlier grades. Firstly, your student is expected to dress for each gym class. Your child's gym classes this year are on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please send them with a complete change of clothes which includes:

  • plain t-shirt
  • shorts or sweatpants (stretchy is key)
  • athletic shoes (designed for function, not fashion)
  • hair tied back
  • minimal and non-invasive jewelry (....and adios those millions of friendship bracelets, eh?)

Students who are not prepared for class will not participate. After three missed days in one school year, I will contact parents for a conversation and to discuss solutions.

The curriculum in gym this year will include many team sports, stave fencing, obstacle courses, stage combat, dance, tumbling, archery, and of course....dodge ball.

This year is also the first year to participate in competitive team sports and represent our school in athletic pursuits. Please read e-mails from our Athletic Director, Janine Moore, to keep abreast of offerings and opportunities. In the middle school we participate as a member of the CAMS league, You can read more about this on the Athletics page of our Handbook.

This fall students can choose to participate in the following sports:

  • Soccer--boys
  • Flag Football-girls and boys
  • Volleyball-girls

This winter students can choose to participate in the following sports:

  • Basketball-boys
  • Basketball-girls

This spring students can choose:

  • Circus Club\

Also, we are exploring the possibility of having the following teams:

  • Volleyball-boys
  • soccer-girls

Please feel free to contact Ms. Moore or me if you have any questions about gym and athletics.
