We are now at the halfway point in our study of the Enlightenment. For Monday, please read chapters 5 - 10 of Candide. We will have a short reading quiz on Monday morning, so read the story closely, making sure that you understand the plot.
I returned your corrected essays to you today. Make the necessary improvements and re-submit your work to me on Monday.
Finally, start building your outline of Voltaire's biography. We have covered his life up to and including the English letters. You should refer to your notes when writing this. We now know lots of good facts about him, and you should also be able to describe his ideas in some detail. For instance, you might mention the ways in which the English Letters were really a criticism of French society. You should have enough material to complete the outline's first and second paragraphs. We will share our ideas in class, so be sure to bring the outline to class.
