8th grade Whitewater Rafting Expedition
Mancos, Colorado & Bluff, Utah

The 8th grade travels to the Colorado plateau to explore the ancestral puebeloan archaeological site at Ute Tribal Park. They then embark on a white-water rafting trip along the Lower San Juan River for 4-5 days traveling many river miles in the canyons from Bluff, Utah to the town of “Mexican Hat.” Led by a team of Deer Hill expedition guides, the students learn the lore of the river as they paddle rafts and individual “duck boats” navigating the forceful rapids and calm bends of the river. They learn campcraft skills, assist cooking meals and make and strike camps along the shoreline every day while experiencing the adventure of river travel, geological exploration and night campfires while sleeping under the desert stars. This trip is intentionally structured as an independent expedition where the students support and depend on each other; it is a culminating capstone experience for the Middle School students’ education (as they are soon to embark on the transition to High School and beyond).
