Follow-Up Letter from the Board Chair
Dear Community,
In last week's Bulletin, I briefly acknowledged the work of our non-faculty trustees this past year and introduced the new officers for next year. This week I want to thank the faculty trustees: Carol Triggiano, College Chair; Luke Goodwin, Administrative Director; and College members, John Trevillion and Jim Kotz.
Carol and Luke attended all Board meetings and we also met on a weekly basis as the School Executive Committee, where we shared our concerns, issues, strategies and accomplishments from our respective realms. It was a pleasure to sit with Carol, an esteemed teacher, and hear her pedagogical perspective on the week's events at the school. She kept me informed on the work within the College, helped me understand some of the underlying philosophies of the College and listened to my perspectives and objectives from the Board realm. Luke, in his second year as Administrative Director, completed the triangle and reported from his realm, which included enrollment, admissions and finances, to name just a few. As the year progressed, his actions clearly demonstrated that as new issues and incidents materialized and were managed, his experience and knowledge continued to mature. His acceptance and respect by the College, and in particular by Carol, were evident and important in their work together and to our responsibilities as the SEC.
At Board meetings, John and Jim were always accessible, lent their views from the College side and offered insights into the Board's understanding of our mission statement. Jim kept the high school in focus and played a part in fundraising by increasing the Annual Fund percentages in the high school. John, the reflective trustee, responded to questions or issues with great aplomb and honesty and was always interested in hearing and considering all sides. He was a member of the Development Search Task Force and gave up much of his already very little free time to those task force meetings.
Thanks to each of you for your dedication to the Chicago Waldorf School and for your individual work on the Board of Trustees. The challenges presented themselves, but the mutual commitment to the school prevailed. It was an honor to serve with you and as the President and Chair of the Board.
-Cynthia Joho, Board Chair & President
Thank You, Cynthia Joho!
Cynthia Joho has been a devoted and active parent in our school community for more than ten years. Her devotion to Waldorf education has been evident in her willingness and commitment to serve the school in innumerable ways. She has been an instrumental leader in the development and formation of the PTO. She was key in creating the idea for a Fair Witness Program that eventually led us in the direction of Kim Payne's social inclusion work. Cynthia and her husband, Chef Jean Joho, have also given generous financial support to many of our school initiatives and fundraising events. These have included many charitable donations to our past auctions, Board-College development work and leadership participation in our Annual Funds. Over the last few years, Cynthia has placed much of her heart, soul and energy into the work of the Board of Trustees. She has served as a PTO Liaison and, for the last year, as the Board Chair. Her deep interest in strategic planning and in governance illuminates her big picture thinking and her long term focus on the vision and mission of the school. In her leadership position, she has carried a commitment to exploring how we can strengthen the school in many ways: enrollment, finances, visibility, best practices and communication. As members of the School Executive Committee, we have met together with Cynthia on a weekly basis for discussion, planning and review of the state of the school. Cynthia has brought to these meetings many of her considerable talents. She has the ability to listen thoughtfully and also to question astutely. She possesses clarity in her thinking along with a sense for the intuitive. She can be incredibly organized and equally flexible. Whatever task Cynthia takes on, she sees it through with full attention. She has an easy humor, a warm smile and a genuine interest in others. Sitting with her every week helped us learn more about leadership, communication and community. We want to give our heartfelt acknowledgment and sincere thanks to Cynthia Joho for her love, dedication and hard work to our school.

Board News & Transitions
The Committee on Trustees (Sylvie Desouches and Renee Wright, Co-Chairs, Cynthia Joho, Board Chair, and Luke Goodwin, Administrative Director) is thrilled to announce some important additions to the Board for next school year.
In January this past year, the Board of Trustees approved the expansion of our Board to a maximum of 20 trustees (from 16). This brings us more in line with our fellow ISACS schools and allows the increasing work of the board to be distributed more evenly across its membership.
The Board of Trustees held its annual elections on May 25th and is thrilled to announce the re-election of two existing trustees and the election of three new trustees to the Board. Their 3-year terms begin on July 1.
Re-Elections:
Joe Ferguson will begin his second term as a trustee and will continue as Treasurer on the Board Executive Committee. We can't thank Joe enough for his expert guidance these past two years as Chair of the Finance Committee, deftly and successfully steering the school through turbulent financial waters. We are grateful for his significant insight and commitment to building the school's financial strength and stability and for helping us to clarify our financial processes and procedures. In November 2009, Joe was appointed to a four-year term as Chicago's Inspector General, moving from his position as a federal prosecutor. He and wife Deborah Boardman are the parents of Luke (2005) and Hugh (8).
Suzanne Reade will begin her third term as a trustee and is the longest standing trustee on the Board. She has served on the Board Executive Committee as Secretary and this past year as Vice President and continues as a member on the Governance Group. Her additional role as Chair of the Development Committee this past year has been invaluable to the school, holding the reigns of fundraising without the support of an events coordinator or a development director. We are grateful that she will continue to co-chair the Development Committee next year and work in the area of her interest, which is marketing. She advocates for Waldorf education outside of our community and continues to expand her knowledge of Waldorf education and anthroposophy. With her background in public affairs, insurance, non-profit management and sales, Suzanne brings a wealth of institutional knowledge and a broad, balanced perspective to her Board work. She and husband Bruce are parents to Zarina (4) and Grant (8).
Elections:
John Figiel is the Director of Learning and Organization Effectiveness at the University of Chicago. He brings years of experience in the corporate world, twelve as a human resource professional and the last eleven in training & development and organization development. His expertise lies especially in organization change and transformation, an area of great value to CWS as we move into a new strategic plan and begin to shape our vision for a permanent home. His human resources experience will also be of great value. He received his M.A. in Labor and Industrial Relations from the University of Illinois, Champaign. He and wife Peggy are the parents of Sean (EC3) and Harry (4).
Mike Rosenthal is a partner at Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal, LLP, where he specializes in corporate law. His areas of expertise are numerous - including, but by far not limited to, private equity and venture capital transaction; corporate finance and restructurings; and general corporate counseling. His value to CWS will include his experience with entrepreneurs and early stage companies, with a focus on how to make organizations more successful and how to assist them in achieving their goals. He brings an entrepreneur's eye to crafting strategy and goals, while using the law as a tool to develop tactics to achieve those goals. He received his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School. New to CWS this past school year, he was invited onto the Permanent Campus Committee and has now accepted to chair. He and wife Sally are the parents of Jack (EC5K).
Leslie Shank comes to us from outside our parent community via high school teacher Brian Gleichauf. Leslie brings warmth and wisdom from many years of expertise in a variety of areas. She is a recently retired Winnetka Public Schools grade school teacher of 16 years (Hubbard Woods School), with 12 years experience on the Winnetka 36 Board as a teacher representative. Including her tenure in Winnetka, Leslie has over 20 years of teaching experience and will bring valuable insight from the public school world. A passionate and life-long learner, she holds multiple degrees, including a M.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Maine and a M.S. in Criminal Justice Counseling, both with highest honors, and has completed masters level work on a Masters of Divinity and towards a M.A. in Philosophy of Religion. Before becoming a teacher, she worked for several years as a vocational rehabilitation counselor and crisis intervention counselor working specifically with teenagers whose lives were in crisis. But wait, there's more! For eleven years she was a construction manager and owner of her own all-female construction company! I believe that's it. In her many years as a teacher she has learned and been interested in the philosophy and practice of Waldorf education, and she is passionate about the progressive education we bring. She very much looks forward to bringing her many years of experience to further the goals and vision of CWS and its Board.
Please join us in welcoming these exceptional people to our Board of Trustees!
Departures:
Elected to the Board in 2008, Amy Kahn will be resigning from the Board at the end of this school year. Amy has served in several ways, most notably as Secretary on the Board Executive Committee and ANNUAL FUND Chair this past school year. We are grateful for the hours of dedicated work Amy has volunteered in support of the school, and for the time and energy she has put forth to reach our Annual Fund goal this year. She has gone far beyond the call of duty, with great energy and good humor, and she will be greatly missed on the Board and BEC. Amy and husband Michael are the parents of Grace (4) and Liza (6).
PTO Liaison:
Frank Verciglio has been elected by the PTO to serve next year as PTO Liaison to the Board. The Committee on Trustees is excited to welcome Frank onto the committee, one of the roles of the PTO liaison in addition to being a member of the Governance Group. He has brought a thoughtful and fair approach to his work as PTO rep to the 7th grade class these past two years and is excited to move into a leadership role as PTO Liaison. Frank has been a buildings tradesman for the past 30 years. He and Roberta Schmatz are parents of Rigel (3) and Augustine (7).
We thank Renee Wright for serving as PTO Liaison for two terms. Renee has brought a mature insight into her work on the Committee on Trustees and the Governance Group. This year, she revised the PTO Charter and documented the history of the PTO as a reference piece for Trustees and College members. Her direct and articulate approach to Board matters was respected in many Board meetings. We are grateful for the time Renee gave to the school, and for her warmth and wisdom. She will be missed. Renee and husband David are parents to Rebecca (7) and Michael (11).
- Respectfully submitted by the Committee on Trustees
From the HS Chair
Dear CWS Community,
As you may have heard, I've been given the incredible gift of a sabbatical for the first semester of the next school year. I'm very grateful to my colleagues for this opportunity to ‘recharge my batteries'. While I'm away I'm hoping to find more choices for the 10th and 12th grade plays (as well as Drama Club options) and new ideas for the 9th and 11th grade theatre classes. I'll also be taking classes at the Center for Green Technology, visiting sister Waldorf schools while, hopefully, also finding the time to sit in my garden and gaze at the stars!
We're all thrilled that Jim Kotz will be taking over as the High School Chairperson. As a beloved colleague and teacher, a valued member of the College and Board and a strong proponent of phenomenological science, he'll lead the high school in many new and exciting directions. It's been a privilege and an honor to serve as the High School Chairperson for the past seven years. I've learned so much in this position and leave this role with tremendous respect for my colleagues, much appreciation for our students and their families and a deep love for this EC-12 grade education.
See you in January!
-Colleen Everhart, HS Chair

CWS Summer Events
Just because school is out doesn't mean that there isn't plenty going on with CWS. We will be participating in a number of exciting outreach events this summer and fall to spread the word about our school and the unique benefits of Waldorf education. You will see us at this year's Pride Parade (June 27), Midsommarfest in Andersonville (next weekend, June 12 & 13), Chicago Folk & Roots Festival (July 10 &11), Glenwood Arts Festival (August 21 & 22) and the Renegade Craft Fair (September 11 &12). We are also waiting for confirmation on our participation in the Evanston 4th of July Parade. Letting people see our name, visit our booths and get a chance to see our community members in action all bring CWS into the consciousness of the greater Chicago community, often resulting in inquiries and admissions for the school. Plus, it's a lot of fun for those of us who participate. If you would like to be a part of any of these events, please contact Jennifer at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or by phone at 773.828.8467.
Schedule Those Appointments Now!
All students in early childhood, including the kindergarten year, and all transferring students (any grade level) plus students entering grades 1, 5 and 9 are required by state law to have an updated physical on file each year. Students in grades 6-12 who want to participate on athletics teams also need to submit a new physical form. Please be aware that if you waive your child's immunizations, the school needs an updated waiver form on file each year. Students in kindergarten year, 2nd and 6th graders need to file dental exam forms. And students in early childhood, including the kindergarten year, are required to have eye exams. Please schedule your appointments now so that you can provide the school registrar, Carly Garcia, with your completed forms prior to the first day of school. Students who do not have their medical forms on file may not be permitted to attend school until these records have been brought up-to-date. Appropriate forms will be mailed out by July 16th or email Carly Garcia or call 773.828.8454 if you need a form before then.

We are also looking for dishes that you love for picnics, potlucks and snacks. This book will be geared toward ‘chefs' with a wide range of abilities so simple, healthy (or at least non-toxic) and, of course, delicious dishes are encouraged. Laura will be spending some of this summer at home in Glenview, and is planning to continue to practice, study and soon teach yoga.
